Well after eating at every other restaurant in Maplewood, it was only a matter of time before I made it to The Crow's nest. This is not ur typical bar grub establishment....its atypical! They offer a lot out of a very small kitchen. I started with their fried deviled eggs appetizer...very good...just a little crunch to bite through and bam...a nice moist egg center. It's topped with a small piece of bacon for another type of crunch and flavor...another bam! My entree was a special 7oz. strip steak sandwich with a side of smashed potatoes...bam bam! It was a really good meal that was complimented by great wait service. I had fun and tasty event that didn't cost a lot! Bam! Bam! Bam!

Quirky bar with staff that has a lot of personality (not a euphemism for anything)! There seemed to be a pretty good crowd of regulars on a Sunday night. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner and a beer and were happy with the selection of local brews on tap. The bf got the fish tacos with a side of salmon minestrone soup, and he couldn't stop raving about the soup. The tacos got devoured entirely. I had the pulled pork Monte Cristo with collard greens, which were both good but kind of oily/heavy. The Fireball BBQ sauce worked surprisingly well. Would be happy to eat/drink here again.

The chili cheese fries were disappointing at best. And the upside down cross on the wall was not cute, hip or kitschy. It as just plan offensive!

Love this place!! Al Swagger was gnar as shit. I slayed the heavy metal brunch and the waffle fries melted my face off. #slayerfries #losercore #thesehashtagsmakenosense

Bang your head! Metal brunch will drive you mad! Lol, so I had carefully perused the menu before we walked in on a Saturday for lunch. My dreams were pleasantly squashed when we walked in and realized it was metal brunch. What is that? Well, it is brunch with metal playing - maybe not for everyone but we were thrilled! They have Bloody Marys, mimosas, and something inspired by NOLA, gin, and an egg. Also, they appear to have a full bar w/ lots of local beer. We both had Bloody Marys which were quite tasty. Thick but too thick and they had a great flavor with just the right amount of spice. The food was fantastic. The boy had fish and chips,$11, and I had chicken and waffles,$11, (shhh, don't tell the veggie police). The fish and chips were so good the fish had a pleasant flavor and the breading was different than your standard pub breading - crumbly with a nice flavor. The chips were waffle fries and they were seasoned wonderfully and had the perfect waffle fry texture. The chicken and waffles were so freakin' good. The chicken was tender and juicy with a wonderful breading and the waffle was huge and very good, maybe a bit on the chewy side but still wonderful. The plate was completed with butter, honey, and syrup. The Crows nest has a divey feel, which we love, and makes us want to venture over to Maplewood more often. We will most def be back to check out the bar and regular menu.

I fondly remember when this place was Fu Man Chu. I wish it still was. It takes a lot for me to give only one star, but this was bad on so many levels. It's bad enough when no one wants to wait on you (should have been our first clue --we were JUST about to get up and leave after waiting 20 minutes to order in an empty restaurant, and I wish we would have), but even worse when they do and you wish they hadn't. Our food-snob hairdresser recommended the Crow's Nest for burgers -- I'd been there once when they first opened and was decidedly unimpressed. When a source we trusted said they'd improved, though, we thought we'd give the Crow's Nest (cute name!) another chance. Note to Crow's Nest: When the staff at Ed Debevic's insults their patrons, it's in good fun. The Crow's Nest is no Ed Debevic's and your rudeness isn't funny (unless you think bubonic plague is funny). Keep it to yourself. So the "wheat bun" on the veggie burger was neither "wheat" nor a bun, it was a hard dried up English muffin. I don't mind a substitution, but it would have been nice to have a few choices... I'd have picked something fresh. And speaking of the veggie burger -- that "burger" was deep-fried, and for MUCH too long. If I'd wanted Kibbeh I'd have gone to Saleem's for the GOOD stuff. Next note: If a customer orders a "side of mayo," they mean mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip. There is a difference, and the difference is huge. Miracle Whip is not food. And, chances are if the customer asks for "a side of" something, they want it with the rest of their meal, not as dessert. Next note: If your customers don't rave over your stale buns and overcooked vegetable cakes, don't imply to them that they've never tasted good food before, just accept the fact that they don't like your food and leave them alone. You'd left us alone for over an hour, so why the about-face? A happier chord -- my mother said her French Dip was passable, though the jus was a bit over-salted. I will never understand how a fine little restaurant like Fu Man Chu can go out of business, and The Crow's Nest can survive for as long as it has. Even the Grateful Inn (prior to Fu Man Chu) was better than this place, and they had a waitress who picked at her feet between delivering orders! EEW! The Crow's Nest staff works too hard to achieve haughty indifference and it isn't working. This is Missouri, after all. Just be nice and show us you can serve a good meal -- no one cares about your sneer.

we went for metal brunch today. We loved it! Mike, our waiter/bartender was superb. the eggs beni were wonderful. If you are looking for first watch, or denny's, this place is not for you. If you want local flavor and a great breakfast we more than recommend. we will be back

The Crow's Nest is another one of those St. Louis area places which has been on my radar for a while. I'm sure it made my list by being on a foodie recommendation list, but I of course could not remember which one or why. Now before I even ate anything I was sold because the restaurant/bar is a legitimate wood panel bar. Gorgeous. Menu changes seasonally which is always a good sign. My group ordered the Castro and the Fidel which were both good, my preference leaning towards the Castro. The person who ordered it says it is one of the best sandwiches he has ever had. Also tried the grilled cheese, quality ingredients. My order and new love of my life, was the BAM. Bacon, aioli, tomato, perfectly toasted bread. This is the perfect combination of sandwich you wake up and realize you dreamed about and then crave for the rest of the day. I will be back. Possibly very soon. Like today.

Popped in for a pint during the Let Them Eat Art event last Friday night. We did not order any food or stay long....simply passing through as we jumped from venue to venue in the neighborhood. The layout and interior immediately made me feel like I was in a place I could grow to enjoy. They have Stag on tap for a whopping $2.50. You can't beat that. They actually had a nice selection of tap and bottled beers, which will always win points in my heart. Our server was super nice and funny so no qualms there. At any rate - will have to pop in again and perhaps sample the food menu. It is certainly a place that appears to have potential.

A huge fan of the now defunct Bleeding Deacon, I now make my way to the Crow's Nest for a good beer and a divey environs. I'll admit that the service can be a bit leisurely, but when I'm at the Crow's Nest, I am not in a hurry. I had a party for my husband at the Crow's Nest about a year ago and they treated us really well. We had our own server; they split tabs; they even reserved a portion of the room just for the large group. I brought my coworkers around for what we like to call "Thirsty Thursday" (ie, end-of- week drinks and work gripes). Now it's our regular spot. Roomy, moody, classed-up bar food. There's a lot to love. Other shinies: -Back porch for outdoor seating and smoking -Metal Brunch on Sundays -It's close to my house and that matters. -Cult classic films projected on the wall help those awkward silent moments between drinks. Nothing starts a conversation like a black and white scene of a 1950s robot shooting things with a lazer gun. My last tip: Park in the lot behind them rather than trying to dick with traffic and parallel parking. (PS Long live The Bleeding Deacon. You'll always be in my heart.)

I'm upgrading from 3 to 4 stars. Since our first visit shortly after they opened (see previous review), I have now been here two additional times. On visit 2 for lunch, I had the Angus Cheeseburger, which was pretty good. On visit 3 for dinner, I had the Steak Frites, and it - along with some great drinks and superior bartending - will be the reason I come back next time. The Steak Frites (see pic) had steak cut into slices served atop tempura'd greens atop of fries with slightly more than a drizzling of some sweet sauce (reminded me of a plum sauce) that went superbly with the steak cuts. It was really very good. The soundtrack in this place (more so at dinnertime) was fun, too. I was hearing all kinds of songs I hadn't heard in a while (playing from an iPod behind the bar I think), which put me in a great mood, and I was sorry we had to go. So if there are just two of you, I would recommend grabbing a seat at the bar, chatting it up with the friendly bartenders, and ordering a meal from the cool menu's housed inside record album covers. And how can you NOT like a place that posts their hours in the front window for "School Nights" and Non-School Nights.

Despite good food, good vibes, and excellent beer choices, The Crow's Nest always fails in the service department. Slow, hit or miss service is always something I expect when I go here and when we went for Metal Brunch on Sunday the service was ridiculously slow. When talking about the food, it is pretty good. My first time at bunch was on Sunday and the Eggs Beni were awesome! On their regular menu, the truffle fries are a must try! Yum! The house salad is always fresh and yummy as well as the mac and cheese. The Crow's Nest is a pretty fun hipster bar to hang out at, but something has got to change with their service or I am going to stop coming here.

I'd say Crow's Nest is 3.5 Stars and very close to 4. Come on Yelp, figure out away for us to give 1/2 stars it really does make a difference. I was in Maplewood "shopping local" on Manchester Avenue and was hit with the lunch time hunger. I took the opportunity to not only shop local, but to dine local as well and what a better choice then the new Crow's Nest. I was promptly greeted by the bartender as I entered and told I could sit wherever I liked. I took one of the open booths across from the bar and started to take notice of their draft beer taps. They had one of my favorites, Schlafly's Pale Ale so it was a no brain er. After looking the menu over I choose the Cheeseburger with cheddar and Waffle Fries. As the server AKA bartender, (he was doing double duty and doing it well) left my table, I checked my iPhone for the time. Since there have been so many comments about how long it takes, I wanted to time it. Must have been a good day, my burger was at my table in under 15 minutes. I ordered mine medium and it was done to my liking. It was garnished with lettuce, red onion and tomato. I do not know where they get their tomatoes, but for a late fall tomato it was excellent. When presented, I thought the bun was a little over toasted on the grill due to the dark coloring, but I was wrong. It was better then a grilled one at Culver's or Steak - n - Shake. To be fair Crow's Nest, I will tell you now that I will be back.

Have you ever had a perfect waffle? I'm talking just the right texture, crunch and bliss as you take that first bite. YOU HAVEN'T! Well wait no longer. Brunch at The Crow's Nest is no less than life changing. Not a fan of waffles... Pick anything else and you will be blown away by the taste.

All I have to say is Metal Brunch! Every Sunday you can enjoy brunch while listening to metal. I love brunch and I love metal, put the two together and I'm in heaven. I ordered that chicken and waffles and Mike O. had the breakfast tacos. Both good and we each had two beers. They offer a nice selection of local bears on tap as well as bottled beers. If metal isn't your thing, but you want brunch...don't be scared because the music isn't too loud. The brunch menu is small, but there are enough choices to satisfy most people. Went back not too long ago for a birthday party. We were able to have a section saved for us toward the front of the restaurant. There wasn't enough room for everyone to eat at the table at the same time so we sat at the bar. We had good service. My only complaint is that they were out of steak for the steak frites....on a Saturday night. I really had my heart set on steak. We did order the meatloaf supper and The Fidel. The meatloaf was so good! Good texture and nice flavor. This might be better than mine and I make a mean meatloaf. The mashed potatoes were nice and the green beans added a nice freshness. I would order this again no questions asked. I hope on my next visit I can try the steak frites. The Fidel was fine. Nothing is jumping out at me about it, but here was nothing wrong with it. The meatloaf was just that good I can't remember. There is a screened in patio on the back of the restaurant. You can park behind the building and come in through the back. There is a full bar. Plenty of bar seating, a handful of booths and some high top tables. This isn't the best choice for a large group unless you don't mind casual eating in shifts...they just don't have the space for a large party. I await my next visit. If I lived closer I could see myself here way too often for my own good.

Great crew and vibe! Had the deep fried deviled eggs and chicken po boy sandwich. Eggs were amazing and the sandwich was probably the best sandwich I ever had! Just wish the sandwich was bigger.

Went here for the first time this week and really liked it. Atmosphere was great and the bartenders were friendly and helpful. There was an arbitrary trivia game going on and we joined in and had a lot of fun! Hadn't tried any of the food, but everyone we talked to that night said it was great. I'll definitely be back!

I really loved going to the Bleeding Deacon on Chippewa, and my wife and I were really upset when it suddenly closed. I had not heard that the Crow's Nest had opened up as a sort of reincarnation. My wife and I were there tonight, and we didn't order anything crazy or stay too long, but we had a really great time! We both had house salads, which were huge and delicious! I had the vegetarian chili and she had the hummus plate. Both of us really enjoyed! Also, a really great selection of beers on tap, as well as bottles and cans! Long story short - while we're not pleased that the location is further from us, but we really like the new digs!

We went here for their Metal Brunch on Sunday morning to recover from the St. Louis Microfest. I liked the decor and the atmosphere quite a bit. The brunch menu wasn't huge but covered all the bases for a good brunch. I had a bloody Mary and the fish and chips. I enjoyed the bloody Mary which is saying something because it's not a drink I usually like that much (I only ordered it because it was metal). The fish and chips were good, but not great. The beer selection is pretty good. It's not huge but they have some good ones. My main complain is the music. If you're going to have a metal brunch, you should play the metal relatively loud. You certainly don't need to blast it but I should be able to hear it over the murmur of the crowd. Much of the music played was good and I would have liked to rock out while recovering from massive beer consumption.

I loved when they had trivia night. The best thing ever is the truffle frites. For real, so good I'm salivating just thinking about them. Cool atmosphere and they play old movies on the wall inside. Definite place to check out and have lunch or dinner and throw back a few beers.

I don't understand why this place wasn't packed. I'm only in St Louis for a few days but I made it a point to come here for brunch and dinner. Both meals were top notch, amazing. The bar itself looks like a dive (obviously on purpose but that's neither here nor there) but the food is 5 star. Knocked me out of my socks. The house drinks are interesting, the draft list is slightly limited, but I am personally not very adventurous with beer so maybe that was just me. The menus in album covers, the artwork (I enjoyed sitting under Bowie) and the whole atmosphere was great. Service was nice both times, even if the servers were a little absent. My only complaint is that during the Black Metal brunch there was no black metal the playing!! Brunch and Burzum go hand in hand right? Overall, Love this place and it might be my favorite thing about St Louis!

I waited until I had been here a second time before writing a review. The first time was for dinner with my father and two sisters about a year ago. That first time I was impressed by their beer selection, and I thought their food was decent for a hipster place. The staff and the service on the other hand was fairly poor. The beer was not cold, being only slightly cooler than room temp. I came back again yesterday with my mother and two sisters to see if anything had changed. Unfortunately it seems things have changed, and not for the better. I decided to go Sundays Metal Brunch. The waitress took our drink order which consisted of 3 Bloody Marys and a mimosa. It took her 15 minutes to return with our beverages, and the Restaurant wasn't even packed. When she returned with the drinks we placed our food order. We didn't see the waitress again for at least 30 minutes. She took our empty glasses and returned 15 minutes later with new drinks. After another 30 minutes of waiting we asked how much longer our food would it be. The waitress we asked never even stopped walking, and instead just shouted that she would check when she had time. We did finally get our food and it only took an hour and thirty five minutes. The food was actually fairly decent but everything else about this place is absolutely piss poor. I do not think I will ever come back. I would rate their beer selection 4/5 stars, food @ 3/5 stars, employees @ 1/5 stars and service @ 0/5 stars. Final overall rating @ 2/5 stars.

This gem of a bar/restaurant is in Maplewood along the built up section of Manchester between Big Bend and Southwest. It is right next to Penzey's Spices. Your best bet is to turn on Sutton and park on the back lot. This place never disappoints me with their food. I have been here for their Metal Brunch (they play head banging metal), dinner and a lazy lunch. I had the best burger the other day along with a Strongbow Cider. Another note is they have Stag on tap. This is not my beer but it seems to sell pretty well for them. Check out their dinner menu. It is very eclectic. Food and service is always stellar in this place. It is not expense either so do yourself a favor and check it out soon.

Went here for the first time last week. The place has a really unique atmosphere (and you could say the staff is unique too :) Friendly, quick service and good food! I'd recommend the French Dip! The only thing we were disappointed in was that they only had about 4 draft beers (one of which is Stag which hardly counts) but I think they change them up quite a bit.

I want to like this place so bad, and I keep going back, then remembering why it has been so long since I went. The atmosphere is neat, the food is good, the service is oh-so-bad. Went last night, had the e-cig bartender this time in, she's just not friendly and she doesn't seem to care if your glass if full or to say the normal things like, "you're welcome" when thanked. Other times I haven't felt so scorned, but it is always slow in the service department. I'll probably give it another shot in a few months, and I'll probably remember why it has been a few months.

As a bar, Crow's Nest would probably receive four stars. As a restaurant, it's much closer to two. I've spent a few late nights hanging around Crow's Nest, and the place reminds me of legendary Hi-Pointe or Hair of the Dog. Very metal/punk rock. The beer selection is fairly decent, covering local craft beer and cheap swill. Considering the area of Maplewood, CN would be my preferred hangout spot. Perhaps a great stop after a few quality beers at the Schlafly Bottleworks. As for the food, I read the other reviews and heard the same things: overpriced and disappointing. My wife and I came in for brunch today and ordered chicken and waffles (ten bones) and a bacon and egg cheeseburger (eleven!). I was willing to get past the price if the food was good. The waitress placed the dishes in front of us, and the first thing that I noticed was the portions. My wife was literally given half a waffle and three chicken strip. My sandwich came on an English muffin and looked more like a slider than a full cheeseburger. I could count the waffle fries on my fingers. As a i stared down at this eleven dollar meal, I started to fantasize about all the great meals that I could have had this afternoon. Overall, the food was solid but nothing to go out of the way for. Worst of all, I was still hungry! Crow's Nest has the potential to be the ultimate dive bar in the StL, but to accompish that task, the management needs to think more like a rock 'n' roll bar and less like a Maplewood joint.

When this place first opened I was ecstatic! I thought I had found my new bar in Maplewood! As I had just moved back to St. Louis after 7 years in the mystical realm of Portlandia, it gave me a homesick vibe of PDX, but with just enough touch of STL that I felt I had found my niche! The films that were shown, the records that were played, the ambiance and the really varied food selection was amazing! Oh, and the beer! A large tap selection, but still had my Busch in bottles for my whisky beerback! Alas, something changed. It almost became too self-referential and anti-STL vibe, instead of embracing the Keep St. Louis Weird it became a farcical version of the Hipster Hideout. The bartenders and waitresses became snarly to the point of pissing me off and the outright lack of connection has turned me off of what was to be a gem of a place. A case in point- Now, I don't consider myself to be too much of a hipster, I mean I have Ray Bans but I wear overalls and I have friends who are not at the least "hipster". I took a good friend of mine, a nice Christian woman who is over 45 and still likes her Michelob Ultra, to The Crows Nest. Yes, she isn't the stereotypical customer for them, but she is a paying one, so you would hope her experience wouldn't be so different. We didn't have table service and their kitchen had closed (even though it was only 8pm) so my friend saddled to the bar and waited... and waited... she flagged the bartender who nodded and returned to his phone (it wasn't busy- which is why I assumed they closed food so early) finally she got to order and he literally said "Really? Michelob Ultra?" My kind friend laughed it off as if it was a joke but I was SEETHING- and I vowed to never come back. I walk by occasionally and look inside with longing... I want it to be the place I first went into- but I guess I will just have to settle for somewhere else. UPDATE (down to ONE star): I didn't want to go. My husband and I sighed and sucked it up and went anyway. When your brother-in-law comes in town and wants to meet at The Crows Nest, you go... From the start, there were the usual looks of disdain... "who were these people in their special bar? These people taking up the seats of their bar. Do we have to serve them?" Begrudgingly, and usually taking 10 minutes, we received our beer and shots and cocktails... and I know they were many because truthfully we spent a heck of a lot of money. So much money, that when I waited 15 minutes (watching the bartenders help 4 other people who arrived to the bar after me) and received my short version tab I asked for a breakdown of my bill... I was so surprised how expensive it was. I soon realized that my friends and my husband did, in fact, drink a lot- but as I stood there waiting to have them run my card, and waiting... and waiting... while the bartenders talked to each other, I knew that the tip wasn't going to be large. Leaving a smaller tip is my right to decide as a customer... what is NOT RIGHT is how I was treated after making that decision. Upon leaving, the bartender and two of his friends proceeded to follow me and my friends out the back door championing us that we had the largest bill of the night. Not only did he congratulate us on the largest bill, but he proceeded to yell just how big that bill was. Not only did he announce how much we paid in alcohol that night, he then said I only tipped 10% and said "I must be from St. Louis, because I didn't know 20% was industry standard". I know not every place is for everyone... but Crows Nest sets a new standard in assholery that I cannot condone. And obviously other people are noticing... the bar wasn't as busy as I've seen it before (our large group of friends were practically the only customers) and their enormous tap selection has dwindled to half the amount... The only thing I can say is their food is excellent and the cook was extremely polite and kind to me and my drunken husband. Huzzah to him... PBBBBBT to the rest.

A great hole in the wall, with very pleasant service. I've been several times and am always satisfied if not very pleased. I've done brunch, and dinner, light snacking, and just sit on my ass casual drinking on the back patio. I find myself in a quandary, because I want the place to do well, but I don't want it crowded. at the same time, I don't want it to go away. it's maplewood's little secret for small restaurant/bars. Kung Fu movies playing on the wall inside, and MC5 or Iggy Pop or the like quietly piped in for some avant garde ambience. Food is always good, from french toast to frog legs, Meatloaf sliders to Waffle fries, you can't screw up. plus they have my favorite beer - La Fin Du Monde, as well as a healthy selection of things besides the run of the mill AB products. went again last night, and actually pondered, "why is the service and food better here than some of the 'higher class' establishments?"

I came back, flying solo, for the Full Metal Sunday brunch. I had no idea that they even served brunch, but a friend of mine mentioned that things had improved as of late, so I stopped by to investigate. I was really, really pleased with my meal. The eggs benedict were so f-ing perfect: the eggs were lightly breaded and fried/ cooked to perfection... something I couldn't wrap my head around. They came with bacon, fried arugula (which is absolutely amazing), and a brown butter hollandaise on top of English muffin. They have truly perfected my perfect breakfast item. My meal came with a choice of sides, but of course, I had to go with potatoes to soak up all the messy sauce- they were lovely as well. As someone who prefers Simon & Garfunkel over Motorhead, I am surprised to say I even enjoyed the music. The bloody mary didn't hurt my feelings either. I am really happy with this Sunday brunch menu and look forward to bringing my husband back to try everything out again. Service was much better for me this time, and I've been told my cranky server has left the building permanently.

This is a tentative 3-stars. I met up with a buddy for some drinks one night at The Crow's Nest. They had a good selection of beers (something I always look for in a drinking establishment) and from what my friend said, their food is great. Since I haven't had the food, I can only comment on the atmosphere - casual and comfortable without being a sports bar. I definitely will be going back to try the food!

What a fun small place with great service! We had a rather large group that I kind of caught the tail end of, and I was super starving. As soon as the leavers were leaving and the new arrivals got settled the server was there and promptly brought me a menu. There were so many words on there that I could not pronounce if I tried. I chose Mac N Cheese because I figured in a place like this, it's not going to be Kraft. I was right and my dinner was awesome. They were pasta shells, but I won't hold that against them because the Cheese was so much better than Velveeta. I never wanted my bowl to end! Can't wait to go back and try something that I cannot pronounce! :o)

This place has a retro punk vibe... it feels eerily similar to Hair of the Dog on Washington. Same shotgun set-up. Same cramped corners. Same weird but strangely cool people, same loud rock through a shitty speaker system. I was here last night during their Halloween party. Although it was cramped, I was able to make my way to the bartender when needed. People were krunked in some pretty awesome costumes.

I've lived in dogtown and worked in maplewood for a well over a year and have visited the crow's nest probably 20 times in that time span. When they first opened, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars. The service was friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. About 3 or 4 months ago we started to notice a decline in the food quality and service. All of a sudden we were getting burnt sandwiches and rude service. We ordered to-go today after they advertised Taco tuesday on their facebook. We ordered tacos and a BAM. They didn't mention the tacos were fish tacos, so all I ate were the handful of fries they included (I'm not a fish guy). My friend's BAM was burnt (see photo) and had all of about 1 slice of bacon on it. I posted this photo of the burnt and skimpy sandwich to their facebook, mentioning that I was unaware they were fish tacos (they should specify) and that the BAM was unacceptable, also including that when my friend went to pick the order up and handed the bartender an amex, the bartender threw it back at him because they don't accept it. That's fine... but why throw it back at him? I really want this place to succeed - they used to have such great food, but now it literally seems they don't give any shits at all. They deleted their facebook post without any correspondence to me, and re-posted the same taco tuesday advert, still sans the info that it is FISH taco tuesday. Sigh. Get it together, guys.

Where to start.... Hmmmm... Oh I know... Music. To say their music is loud is an understatement. I know it's a Friday night and people want to party but when you're a restaurant don't you think it should be a little softer so people can talk? Our date night consisted of one of us saying something and the other person saying "HUUUUUUH????" Not pleasant at all... And that was before we even ordered our food. I wish I could say that it gets better but it only went downhill from here. The waitress was nice but it was the kinda nice where she's not really interested in how you are but she had to ask. When we asked for a drink menu she pointed to the board and walked away (if she said something I didn't hear it). When she finally came back we ordered a few beers but the first few types my boyfriend ordered weren't available, which was pretty annoying. I wasn't very hungry when we ordered so I had my boyfriend order a side salad with his sandwich and then we ordered the gravy fries (since I had heard they were a must try). Bleeeeech. We received the fries first and it tasted like they put lukewarm gravy on cold fries thinking it would warm up the fries. Not good at all. Not only were they cold upon arriving but they had so much dill on them it was overwhelming. We tried to pick off the gravy and eat the fries cause they were actually pretty good. The beau liked his sandwich but the salad was underwhelming. I took two bites and couldn't stomach it. I truly wanted to like this place but unfortunately it left me hungry (no really, I ate a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch when we got home) and disappointed.

So this place is really great. went here tonight for a friends birthday for the first time. This is -not- a "hipster" bar as so many reviews on here claim. This is just a good old fashioned rock and roll dive bar, with a decent kitchen. The juke-box was on point. the food was pretty good (fried deviled eggs, what?!). This is the kind of place that you would expect to catch a really good JAMC, or Replacements cover band. Cant wait to get blackout drunk here some day soon

After long anticipation, I decided to check out this place for their Sunday brunch. We walked in at 12:30pm on a Sunday and there was no one else in there besides a few people at the bar. The hostess told us to sit where we wanted. It took her a good 5 minutes to bring us over menus and take our drink order. After she brought our drinks, she literally didn't come back for a solid 15 minutes. The brunch menu only had about 15 items on it- definitely did not need that long to decide what we wanted. We ordered....and waited....and waited. At least 30 minutes went by before someone, not the original waitress, came to check on us and fill up our beverages. When coming back, he asked if how we were doing and we said we were just waiting on our food. Not even 5 minutes later, after we had been waiting over 45 minutes, the waitress sits down with a plate full of food for her "break". That is when we said enough is enough- if they are serving their staff before paying customers, we do not want to spend our money there. We got up and walked out- and went to The Post, where we knew their food was good and we would receive excellent customer service. I was really looking forward to trying out this place, as I have a few friends that frequent this place. Unfortunately, after receiving such horrible service, I will not be back.

Great to hang out and drink and people watch as well as get a good meal with a different flair. You can eat at the bar and get a table. A bit on the small side and can be a bit crowded.

This review is for beverages only. However we did see menus and a random plus is that all of their menus are on the back of old LP covers. A+ for being unique. This place is definitely the definition of a hipster bar, and that's neither a positive nor a negative. The atmosphere is nice, with some cool music from a band you've never heard of playing with the old time movie being shown on a projector at the back of the bar. The location overall is very narrow but high top tables in the back, with booths along the wall and ample bar stool make it comfortable even on a crowded night. Their pints selection is one of the better ones in the neighborhood, it actually happens to be where I fell in love with Tank no. 7 from boulevard (if you haven't tried it, find it). Bartenders were funny and sarcastic, which fits the bill quite well, but always prompt to serve up another pint. I've been a couple times now, and am never against going back.

I started out loving this place when it first opened. The food was great, the beers were fantastic and the service was exceptionally good. I don't know what happened, but they have gone downhill fast. Suddenly, they have take things off of the menu that were fantastic, only to have them replaced with things that are subpar. Or, they have left things on the menu, but tweeked them in a way that was not for the better. For example, the flat iron steak sandwhich used to come with brie. It was amazing. Now, suddenly, it comes with a slimy square of what is supposed to be swiss, but seems more like white american. You would think they would have made some noticeable alerts on the menu about this or at least had the staff let people know when they ordered. Also, while they carry Civil Life Brown Ale, which is wonderful, they are almost always out of it. In fact, they are often out of MANY beers. This happens way too often to be an accident. Someone is screwing up. Also, the wait staff that they used to have have suddenly all disappeared and been replaced with people who seem vacant at best, and stupid at worst and honestly don't seem to care about anyone's experience. I would have given this place five stars before all of this happened. It was one of my favorites. Fingers crossed that they'll come back to life, but they seem to be on a downhill slide. It's a shame.

idk about you but i expect consistancy at restaurants. i just called in a pick up order of a veggie burger, which ive had before. when i got home, i found a handful of fries and an undercooked burger with one tomato. for 10$ that is just ridiculous. wont be eating here for a while.

Went here on a Saturday night with a few friends around 9pm. We stayed for a few drinks and a brownie sundae ("the best thing you'll never eat" my lactose tolerant friends assured me). I was really stoked to see that they had Pyramid Apricot. The waitress was quite attentive. It never really filled up, despite being there until 11:30... which might have made me stay. Pro: drinks, brownie sundaes Neutral: atmosphere, service

One of my favorite bars/restaurants in St. Louis. Recently tried the fried deviled eggs and they are amazing! Good beer, great ambiance, and fun times to be had. Support local restaurants/bars!

I'm done going on Monday nights when the same bartender always seems to be working. Slow isn't the right word, it's more like she just STOPS working. Tonight after I arrived I sat at the bar for over 20 minutes with my credit card in hand trying to get her attention before I decided to get up and leave. It wasn't even busy and there are only maybe 12 seats at the bar, but I was just flat out ignored... again... This is the fourth or fifth time I've gone for their trivia night (which would otherwise be fun) and it's just impossible to get any kind of service in this place for some reason. The guy behind the bar says he's a barback and can't help me, while the girl bartending leans on the back counter and smokes her e-cigarette and sips on a drink and chats with people, not paying a lick of attention to people at the bar who might want to, I don't know... purchase a drink or two? Done with this place and it's piss poor lazy staff.

If you like your food served late, this is the place for you. Thirty minutes for a cheese burger at 8 pm? They make up for it however by serving the food cold, like it was sitting in the ready to be served window while the waitress had more important things to do. Not a lot of organization here, no one keeping track of the wait list for table, its pretty much a free for all. This place needs a new manager. If you only want an interesting place to drink, not a bad place, looks just like the old Red Lion, but the service is terrible and the menu very limited.

If you're looking for an unpretentious hipster pub where nearly everyone has visible tattoos, the beers range from trashy to craft, and the food is an eclectic take on old familiars, this place is for you. The Crow's Nest has been launched by the same people who brought us the Bleeding Deacon, and they seem to have learned a few lessons from that endeavor. the atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious despite its hipster vibe. It's a dark, wood-paneled kind of place. The service is (mostly) prompt, and the food is creative and fun. There's a great grilled cheese, a very tasty steak dip, a unique take on the familiar Cuban sandwich (called the Castro). The gravy waffle fries are a unique take on what could have been a plain menu item. I've yet to try the calves' brains or hte frog legs, but that's about as wild as the small menu gets. All the food is affordable and seems priced right. Menus are assembled on record album covers, and there's usually some very old French film playing (with subtitles) projected on a screen on the wall. I haven't tried their brunch yet, but I'm curious, given that a few Sundays ago, they were advertising a "heavy metal brunch." My only complaint is that they are frequently out of several menu items, and they have not been great about telling me that before I order. I've been told by someone who knows the building that there is extremely limited storage space, so that is probably the deciding factor. It's not a major issue for me, but I wish they were better about communicating it, or possibly writing on a board somewhere which menu items are 86ed. all in all, I love the feel, ambiance, and menu at this laid back and unique pub. I look forward to possibly being a regular here. Especially once I get a few visible tattoos.

Came to The Crow's Nest on Saturday night for a few drinks with some friends and ended up having a really great time. The service was good and the music that was playing was awesome. Also, I have to say that the atmosphere inside was pretty awesome. The place definitely has some character and I was pleasantly surprised at the service and smells of the food coming out. I didn't get a chance to sample any of the food as we had just come from down the street so everyone was pretty much full and ready to get their drink on. A funny thing that happened was that it appeared they were running out of glass wear before they could replenish it. All of our drinks came out first in tumblers, then in rocks glasses, then in what appeared to be just shot glasses and then back to rocks glasses. Aside from that we all had a good time. For 4 people we had a tab of about $66 which wasn't too bad. Not a bad spot and will definitely have to come back here for the food.

The Boyfriend and I went to The Crow's Nest on a whim, as we were tired of the same old places. This funky little restaurant did not let us down! First off, the menus are awesome - they are old album covers with the menu attached inside. (My menu was the "Physical" album by Olivia Newton John. Love it.) Second, our waitress came over right away to take our drink orders and to answer any food questions that we had. Third, the menu itself is pretty unique. They have interesting items such as frog legs and calves brains, but also other more mainstream items such as flatbread pizzas and salads. However even these items have a nice twist to them. I got the Steak Salad which was delicious - flank steak cooked perfectly, fresh, crispy lettuce, gorgonzola cheese, diced veggies, and a tomato buttermilk dressing. It was a huge portion so I definitely didn't leave hungry! The Boyfriend got the Meatloaf Sliders with fries...and now that's all he talks about! Four good-sized sliders with a meatloaf/green bean/bacon ketchup mixture inside of a delicious Hawaiian bread bun. The fries are your basic french fries, but the seasoning they use adds a little pep to the taste. Our bill was about $5 more than one might expect to pay for food items like these, but it was well worth the few extra bucks. Overall we were really pleased and plan to come back to try a few other items. We also randomly wound up coming back here the very next night to meet some friends for drinks. My bar tab wasn't an arm and a leg like some other bars we go to and we had a great experience that night too! And by the time we left, The Boyfriend had told the entire bar about his love for the Meatloaf Sliders. Ha.

This is a dive bar through and through and, while some of my best friends are dive bars, the Crow's nest just misses too many steps to be enjoyable. The food was acceptable but not great. My pulled pork was a little flavorless so I ordered a side of BBQ. The menu advertised that their sides, sauces, and extras were house made so I had high hopes that this would redeem the lackluster sandwich. Unfortunately, it was way too smokey and just kind of weird so I ended up dipping it in my wife's au jus. Her Roast Beef sand. was actually pretty good by comparison and my waffle fries were really good. Overall, just not worth the price (8~$10 a sandwich w/side) I am a total beer snob most of the time, but I also recognize that different bars focus on different parts of the beer spectrum. This is a PBR kind of bar so I ordered a draft STAG but was told that it wasn't cold yet. Next, I tried to order something in a bottle that would fare a little better on Ratebeer.com but I was told they didn't have cold glasses so I gave up. As a pin-addict, the whole experience could have been saved for me if their 2 pinball machines had worked properly. Alas, the classic Space Shuttle table had almost no working lights and the Elvis was running with only 2 of its 3 flippers. This seems like the proper place to remind bar owners that just because a pinball machine can be turned on and will take money from its customers, does not mean it is working. Even a casual player would feel ripped off having dropped quarters in these. On a positive note, the service was attentive on a busy-ish late Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, while bad service can ruin a good experience, good service can't really salvage an otherwise bad one. There are far better dive bars in St. Louis.

God Bless you Crow's Nest for filling the void in my stomach that has been there since Deacon closed. You're not the same, but you're close and I really think I can love you just as much (totally picturing that Brothers movie with Toby McGuire here. Deacon has died and I've taken up with his hotter brother... weird reference? Yeah, I agree, but whatever). Went in here last night with Nicole S. after work because we've both been wanting to try it out. It was pretty dead at just before 6, but by the time we left it was packed. Our waitress let us know it was happy hour, so we ordered beers and potato frites, which were $4 for happy hour. OMG were those things good! The waffle fries were cooked perfectly, the gravy was delicious and the bacon was the perfect way to top it off. Go get this NOW. I was beyond thrilled to find the album cover menus alive and well here. Their contents were similar to that of Bleeding Deacon, but definitely a smaller selection. Also, props to whoever wrote the menu. The fine print scattered throughout is hilarious. I was torn on several options (the have a slider of the day!) but ended up going for the grilled cheese. This was my Deacon staple, and I just had to know. Side options are green beans, waffle fries, house salad or ceasar. Personally I wish there were a few more options, but I'll live. Ok, so the grilled cheese verdict: FANTABULOUS. HOLY CRAP IT WAS SOOOO GOOD. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It wasn't the Deacon version, but dare I say it was better? It's going to take everything I have to branch out next trip, but if that damn grilled cheese was any indication, everything else will rock too. I will keep on hoping the Deacon will rise again, but even if it does it'll have to fight for my attention with Crow's Nest.

I want to give this place an amazing review but I can't. First it is Bleeding Deacon 2.0, second this spot was the Red Lion and he Grateful Inn which were both great places. For an appetizer we had their truffle fries with bacon and dill truffle sauce that was amazing but that was really the only good thing they had going for them. For dinner I had a sandwich that had celery, hummus, apples and mushrooms on it and I felt that didn't have that much flavor. Our waitress was nice but at the end when she gave us our bill she charged us for something we didn't order, she did take it off but it was pretty slow in there so I don't know how she would have thought we ordered that.

The food here is an improvement over the restaurant that previously was here. They have a small menu but everything is very creative. I ordered a sandwich with hummus, apples and celery. It was a different combination but the flavors really came together well. The waffle fries were alsodelicious. It is a great casual restaurant with a little more kick than some of the other bars/pubs in the area - sometimes you just want a beer with something that has way more flavor than your regular boring burger and fries. I will certainly be back.

I've only been here twice now, but I already like it better than what used to be in this space along the Maplewood strip - The Red Lion. The first time we were here, they had just opened and only had a few beers on tap, as well as a very limited bar. The full menu was there, however, and we opted for the special. The special was beef tenderloin (or some other very tender steak) sandwich. Absolutely delicious, as were the fries that came with it. We've also tried the truffle fries, which were positively sinless. I'm excited to come back and try the rest of their menu, including their appetizer of frog legs! The second time, we bellied up at the bar and enjoyed their respectable-for-the-size-of-the-bar craft beer menu. There are at least 10-12 craft beers on tap here, probably over half of which are local. Schlafly (obvi), Urban Chestnut, Perennial Artisan Ales, just to name a few. Prices were reasonable - around $4-$6. With living in the area, and having a penchant for craft beers, I'm sure I'll be a regular here soon!

This place is pretty interesting - it's like an upscale gastro pub with a twist of cuban/caribbean and heavy metal. Interior seating area is small but with fun decorations, and the menus are made from old album covers! I went there once but would definitely go back. Got the fish po-boy and it was fantastic. The side salad was more than just a bag of lettuce - it had feta cheese and a nice mix of greens. Our server was nice and friendly, and recommended good beer choices. It's good food, and prices are totally decent - especially considering the quality.

Stopped in here with a friend visiting from Dallas after reading in the RFT it was the same people behind another favorite, the Bleeding Deacon. I had the Grilled Cheese made with apple, honey and of course, cheese (amazing - recommended by the bartender who described himself as a grilled cheese connoisseur, thank you). Also had the house salad as my side and a glass of cab. The bf ate my leftovers within 3 minutes of me arriving home and wanted more. My friend, who has a gluten intolerance, had the pulled pork (I think), which he ate all of before I could sample. They were more than accomodating in creating him a dish he could safely eat. Someone next to us had ordered the open-faced chicken sandwich, which looked absolutely amazing. I think I'll be trying the open-faced veggie next. As for ambience, it was quite empty the night we were in there, probably because there was a Cards playoff game and this place shows old movies on a projector and does not have a tv. Music appeared to be from an iPod, which I enjoyed. I am quite looking forward to my second visit. Update: I went back (they were showing the World Series on the projector this time and had drink specials) with a group of friends. This time I had the vegan burger, which was made in-house and was wonderfully seasoned. They also make their own sauces and condiments in-house, too. My friends had the grilled cheese and the fall harvest sandwich. We all cleaned our plates. Creative food, great prices.

The Bleeding Deacon's little brother seems off to a good start. The place was pretty busy on a Friday night -- a lot busier than the previous occupant, The Red Lion, was when I went on a weekend night some time ago. The menu is pretty small, limited to about five appetizers, around ten entrees, and if I recall three desserts. The limited selection leaves a lot to be desired. I remember there being hummus, frog legs, truffle fries, a pulled pork sandwich, a B.A.T. (Bacon, Arugula & Tomato) sandwich, a cheese sandwich, a seasonal sandwich, chicken, fish and chips, meatloaf, steak frites, and mac & cheese. We started out with the hummus, which has a little twist: It's made with peanut butter instead of the typical tahini (sesame paste). My wife took the first taste and made an unhappy face... I took a bite and was also wondering whether I like it or not. However, after eating more, we both decided that we liked it pretty well. It was a little different, but not too different, than regular hummus. My wife ordered the aforementioned B.A.T., which came with hazelnut-encrusted bacon, arugula, tomato, and some sort of aioli. She liked it a lot, although the waffle fries that came with it were nothing to really write home about. For my part, I ordered the meatloaf, which came with cornbread and greens tossed in their buttermilk dressing. The meatloaf was decent, but when you got a bite that contained glaze on it, it really made it excellent. The cornbread was herbed (normally with basil, but they were out, so it had rosemary) and quite good. The greens were fine, but the buttermilk dressing was super bland. The beer selection was decent, with a reasonable number of beers to please most people's palates. I had a glass of Boulevard Tank 7, which they had on tap. If Yelp allowed half stars, I would have given this place three-and-a-half stars. However, they're new, and I think they have a lot of potential (and I do like their sister restaurant, The Bleeding Deacon), so I'll bump it up to four instead of rounding down to three.

The food? Excellent! The service? Not as excellent. The service was basically my only gripe about my experience here. I was meeting some friends for a birthday dinner, and my husband and I arrived a little earlier than anyone else. We put together a table to seat 6 (a bit of a challenge here) and then asked the waitress what beers they had on tap. She looked kind of confused, then said we could just go look at the bar ourselves. While we have legs, and had no problem walking the 5 feet to the bar to look at the options, it was still a rude response from our "server." Her attitude towards us (or rather her having to be at work possibly) never got better, though I imagine she was just having a bad day. Considering that was my only complaint with the evening, I wouldn't hold it too much against Crow's Nest as a whole. I had the grilled cheese w/ bacon and it was heavenly! The mac n cheese was tasty as well. The Maplewood location isn't close enough for us to travel back to often, but if someone suggested it, you'd hear no complaints from me.

I came here last night with a friend. It was a spur of the moment sort of decision: Him: 'What do you feel like doing?' Me: 'Eating. Maybe drinking?' Him: 'Have you been to The Crow's Nest?' Me: 'No, but I've been dying to try it. Let's go!'' A local spot in my 'hood. I'm all about eating locally. Aimee should be proud. Anyway, it's in the spot where The Red Lion used to be, and it looks exactly the same. Lots of seating in the form of high top tables, booths, and of course, the bar. We grabbed some seats at the bar, and the super friendly bartender handed us some menus. But first, we drink! The Crow's Nest has a great variety of beers on tap. I went with the Urban chestnut zwickel, which I loved. There was also stag, a few other urban chestnut brews, some selections from schafly, etc. Food-wise, the selection was good. My friend went with the black angus cheeseburger, cooked medium (atta boy!) with waffle fries. The burger was fantastic, even though it was more on the medium-well side. Sigh. The waffle fries were awesome, too. Super crispy and hot. Love! I wasn't super hungry, but when I saw that bread pudding was on the menu... You know how this story ends, right? Pear Gorgonzola Bread Pudding. Get in mah belly! It was quite good. It came with a delicious caramel sauce, slices of pear, and crumbles of Gorgonzola. The BP itself had the perfect texture; it reminded me of French toast, which I enjoyed. Prices were reasonable, and service was fantastic. I'm a huge fan, and I'm happy that the crow's nest is in my hood! Here's to hoping it stays around for a long time.

I have been in here a couple of times and had a great experience each time. The first time, I stopped in for a happy hour drink and food. They have an innovative menu that I was surprised to find. I had to try several items. The bartender was friendly and willing to chat. I often ask numerous questions about a place when I get the opportunity. I find some people are willing to chat, while others aren't always. They have a great beer selection from many local breweries. I love that St. Louis bars are becoming much more local brewery friendly. Maplewood is becoming quite a little scene for great restaurants and The Crows Nest is doing their part. I love the atmosphere, old movie and music posters and the music playing has always pleased.

    (4)
  • Drew T.

As Maplewood becomes more and more hipster, there has to be places that these music loving folks can go. The Crow's nest is that place as their menu is encased in old record covers and their jukebox is filled with the type of music rarely heard on the radio. A few pinball machines sit near the entrance to entertain you while you wait for your food. The interior is clean and lined with some really cool life sized movie posters adding to the ambiance. The food is quite inspired, and they even have a south city classic on the menu not seen in many restaurants for quite some time. The calves brains are actually quite good and if you can get past the texture, they may end up being one of your favorite dishes.

I was there for late lunch, only 1 other table being served. Atmosphere: the place needs a new identity. Looks the same as Red Lion. Meal: BLT (they call it BAT) with waffle fries. The bread and bacon were delicious, they just need to change up the ration. The sandwich consisted of 4 slices of bread. ugh. carb bomb. I took off 2 slices, but by doing this, also eliminated some of the aioli. The bacon was hard to identify and find - there simply wasn't enough of it, and it seemed to be all in pieces instead of strips. The fries came out at room temp. w/o seasoning (not even s&p). jeez Note to sandwich chefs: Please put shredded lettuce on sandwiches instead of whole leaf; doing so eliminates other ingredients from being pulled out with a hearty piece of green. Although this restaurant is closer to home, I may just have to rely on their other place (Bleeding Deacon) for good eats......until further notice.

I headed towards the Crows Nest after learning about an extremely long wait at Shlafly's down the street. This restaurant has a hole-in-the-wall feel to it. I liked that it was not super busy but I was not impressed by the menu. Many items that my friends and I wanted to order had been crossed off the item, which was very disappointing. I did not stay there later than 9 pm so I cannot attest for the night life, but as far as dining experience is concerned it was very poor.

I would call this a gastropub, though I know that name gets bandied around a lot. I've been here a few times in the last month or two, and it's been nearly empty. A shame, because the food is some of the best I've found in the St. Louis area in this genre of place. Count on interesting takes and salads and sandwiches. For devotees, calves' brains are on the menu! None for me thanks, but I'll definitely be back.

There's a difference between being unaffected and being rude. The bartender at The Crow's Nest was rude...and wore a faux-hawk. Sigh. I'll tell you what it ain't, it ain't the Bleeding Deacon; and it ain't a place I want to get drunk at.

haven't made it in for food yet, but the bar is OK, great place to hang with friends, late evening drinking, patio / deck, interesting staff, eclectic music with an emphasis on 80's, Morrissey, and old punk). baseball games, soccer tourneys, old movies on the projector screen. Located in Maplewood, makes a good central meeting location (a lot of free parking in the back) before or after from music venues, Muny, baseball games....

I've been here several times to booze it up (they have nice beer selection), but the other night, the husband and I went for dinner. Being the raging carnisaur that I am, I ordered the calf-brain sandwich. The brains were coated in tempura, then fried. Unfortunately, I think they must have fried them in the same oil as fish or something, because they tasted EXTREMELY FISHY. I wanted cow brain, not fish brain. Anyway, I accidentally made some fishy-tasting pork steaks once, so I will forgive the mistake. The husband had a burger, which was, unfortunately overdone. We both felt that the fries needed a separate ramiken for the gravy sauce (the sauce was on top and sogging up our fries). It's unlikely we'll be back for food soon, but this bar has got to have the best music/ atmosphere in Maplewood. Since we'll live down the road, we'll return for drinks. Just no more fishy brains.

service was excellent, food was good, but very limited menu,so for picky eaters I would check out menu before hand. Salad and truffle fries excellent!

I was in a few weeks ago and had a beer with a friend. While I was sitting outside, the other employee working at the time commented on how the bartender was "wasted" and apologized to the guests sitting next to us. When I went inside to get my tab, said bartender claimed he didn't have my credit card. He got in my face and started accusing me of losing it, insisting I empty my pockets, purse, etc. He finally found my card and threw down on the bar. I grabbed it and walked away, pretty annoyed, to say the least. As I was walking out of the bar, he started screaming at me, calling me a "f***ing b**** and telling me to get the f*** out of his bar and flipped me off. I called the manager the next day. The manager apologized and sent me gift certificates. I just went in on Friday to use them and the same bartender is apparently still employed there. I take it that the bartender's behavior described above is considered acceptable in this establishment. That being said, I will no longer go here for food or drinks. I was pretty offended at what happened, but that doesn't seem to be any concern of the Crow's Nest. Also, the food was infinitely better when it was Bleeding Deacon.

I really love this place! I had never been to the Red Lion (not much of a Maplewood fan) but LOVED the Deacon so I thought I'd try the Crow's Nest. I have to say, I am happy to tell you all that I really enjoyed it! The service is great, the food is yummy, and the beer list is extensive! I have been here a few times now and have been making it a usual stop on my list of eating/drinking establishments. I like that they run movies via projector on the bare wall and that the staff is very laid back and attentive. I don't need someone to kiss my butt when I go out or demand constant attention- so if you're one of those then you might want to go elsewhere. This is a place where you can hang out, become friends with the staff, drink great beer, have dinner or a snack, and catch up with awesome friends. I can't wait til the patio opens!

I love The Crow's Nest. The food is absolutely amazing. I totally wasn't expecting the pulled pork sandwich to be very good (bar food usually isn't, right?) but it was soooooo tasty. After the first bite, I realized this place wasn't just a bar, but a great restaurant too. The music was great, the servers were really funny, and the drinks weren't too expensive. What's not to love? I lived in Chicago for about 4 years, and had a little spot near my house, Alive One, that I'd go to fairly often. The owner and I shared a love for Bob Dylan, and the beer selection was pretty legit. The employees weren't assholes, and the vibe was spot on. I didn't think I'd find a bar or restaurant I'd like as much in St. Louis, but The Crow's Nest proved me wrong. Can't wait to go back!

We've only been here twice, once for drinks and once for a snack, and it was early--just after they opened. We ordered the truffle fries, which were good, but they cost too much and it was a small serving for such a high price. I liked the wait staff and loved the atmosphere, but if we go back again for a meal, which leaves us as underwhelmed, I won't be wouldn't shouting or "yelping" to anyone about this place.

I visited here three times with reasonable expectations. You see, I'm a die hard Deacon fan, but since they've closed I haven't found a place that even compares. I wanted to love the Crow's Nest...however, this was not the case. I've tried 6 different menu items (a combo of apps, entrees and desserts). Not impressed. The gravy frites were quite good, but did not enjoy anything else. My boyfriend also had different items off the menu and had mutual feelings towards the food. The drinks were similar to the Deacon's list. Nothing to complain about there. Overall, this might be an ok place to grab a few drinks, but I'm disappointed in the food choices. Another negative...it looks exactly like the Red Lion.

If you like a laid back environment with a few idiosyncrasies to keep it interesting, this is a fun bar/hangout. Great beers, friendly and unpretentious staff, cool decor without the illusion of trying too hard, and a refreshingly pithy menu. The bartender/waitress is always happy to suggest a new beer or provide a few samples to ensure you're enjoying yourself. They have a projector that casually shows either local sporting events or old movies on the wall (yesterday: Night of the Living Dead). You can get frog legs or fried calf brains if you wish or stick to something more traditional. The food generally lends the feeling of high quality (the green beans are fantastic!) though a downside is a fairly small portion for the price. It's likely enough to satisfy your reasonable hunger, but I suppose I've grown accustomed to the aspect of American cuisine that typically offers portions so large you leave the table a bloated, loathsome creature. Also, if you're hoping to not spend a significant wad of cash, I suggest you check the price on a recommendation before knocking a few of them back. I had enjoyed 3 or 4 of a great new beer and only realized later they were $7 a piece. Some are as much as $9, so your tab can be a surprise if you're not paying attention.

This is a quiant little place with some of the most DELICIOUS food! I always drove past this place and was always curious about their staff, food, etc. I went in for the first time last night and very much enjoyed dining there. The mood is low key and relaxing. As soon as you walk in theres a serve with a smile on their face ready to seat ya and theres a bar about 3 steps away with a pleathora of drinks to choose from. Like for instance, Arrogant Bastard, New Belgiums, wines, etc. Their food is soo GOOD! I had their b.a.t. its almost like a blt but their bacon is apple smoked which i thnk makes a different and they put just the right amount of may on their sandwhich. Their waffle fries have some zing to them and are also just as good as their b.a.t. Service was great, food was unbelieveable and the staff was super nice. This place is a must go to! p.s. They also have a few tiny things that makes this place really neat, but ill let you go there and figure it out for yourselves

11 beers on tap and it looks like 30 more in bottles. Limited but well thought out menu. I like this place. They have a large wall projection television which right now is showing an old b&w Tony Curtis movie.

My boyfriend and I went to check out the Crow's Nest last week. It's a pretty laid back place definitely no need to get dressed up or anything. They have local draft beers on tap and a short menu that I would consider a step up from regular bar food. We started off with the hummus which was great. I was skeptical about the addition of peanut butter in the dish but it proved to be delicious. Then we had house salads which were good but nothing special. I went with the grilled cheese which was pretty tasty but my boyfriend's dish looked even better. He got the steak frites, waffle fries and quite large portion of steak. He ate every last bite! We wanted to try the bread pudding but they were all out so I guess that means we will be making a trip back!

Stopped in for a drink while visiting and I would make this a must-stop in if I ever go back. The neighborhood has darling boutique shops and then there is a gem of a little antique bar that feels sort of Brooklyn bar meets Portland bar. Loved all the punk rock and rock and new wave stuff all over. The juke box (via your cell) was playing great tunes. Only had a drink and had to go- but again. I would so go here again.

My girlfriend and I went for lunch. it's a dark joint. And it was freezing cold. We both got burgers. They were fine. Service was good. The restroom was interestingly tawdry and dirty.

My toddler and I stopped in for lunch while in the area last weekend, and I was very happy I unexpectedly arrived during Metal Brunch. We seated ourselves in the not overly busy dining area, closer to the door to keep away from most patrons that may or may not be excited to see a 2.5 year old in a bar. The music wasn't quite Metal, but it kept up a good atmosphere. I ordered the New Wave of Bacon, Egg, and Cheeseburger with breakfast potatoes. My son was requesting hot dogs, so I asked our waitress if there was anything hot dog-esque the kitchen would be able to appease him with. She suggested a kid's cheeseburger on an english muffin so as not to overwhelm the burger with bread and be more like mom's burger. Little dude was quite happy with his burger, and I was very happy with mine. I would definitely order it again (though I may have to try the chicken and waffles next time...). After ordering, I half forgot about the peppercorn aioli until I got my burger and took the first bite. It was a tangy surprise and really made the burger something special. No problem with service, as others have mentioned and I have experienced in the past. She promptly greeted us and took our drink order, checked on us at regular intervals without being an annoyance, and our food arrived quickly. Much better than the last go!

Solid dive bar. Geared more towards the alternative crowd. Haven't been to their Metal Brunch, but I hear it's a good time.

Surprisingly great food. Their heavy metal brunch is killer too. Deep fried poached eggs for the Eggs Benedict? Hell yes. Excellent music playing at all times. It varies from punk to metal. My favorite bar in maplewood whether im just trying to get drunk or getting a bite to eat.

Love to grab a beer here with friends, and it's often pretty chill and not super crowded, especially on week nights. I had the fish tacos the last time I was there and enjoyed them. My friend ordered a Caesar salad and said it was fantastic. The staff is always friendly too!

You seriously have to try this place out. My fiancé and I came here on a Tuesday night, we just wanted some beer and bar food. Their "bar food" is awesome! Creative chef that delivers tasty foods. We had the Fancy meat fries, pulled pork monte cristo with beans and rice, BLT with collard greens and topped it off with their Pineapple Bacon Bread Pudding. Everything was great. Beers were also very good. Service was awesome, knowledgeable about the menu and all of the beers, provided great suggestions and just fun to be around. We will be back and you need to try it!

We did their Heavy Metal brunch two weeks ago and everyone loved the Bloody Marys and their food! It was all wonderful. This week we went in for lunch and I had the BLT which was AWESOME. My sister loves this place, she runs the kitchen of a well known restaurant in STL and loves the Crow's Nest food and drink :)

Great conversation with bartender Swackmaster Al. Tasty Greyhound to drink washed down the special with the soup du jour, schmancy grilled cheese and smoked tomato soup. Omiglob that was tasty and greasy and cheesy. Definitely not health food, but this is a bar after all!

Unpretentious pub with fun people on staff and the regulars - the experience is made even more wonderful by the delicious food with unique flavors. I just had the new steak frites and expected a small portion of meat for the nominal $15 charge but instead had a perfectly prepared strip steak enhanced by the cola gastrique and bacon butter. The Yukon gold potatoes were flavorful and tender- The kitchen staff has all the right skills!

I love going to the crows nest. It has that perfect quirky, divey feel but has amazing food! The staff are super welcoming and all awesome. When you walk in to Crow's Nest, it looks like they'd have crappy food. Do not fear, I've never had a bad meal here! They have amazing burgers and for the first time I tried their famous vegetarian chili...I'm usually a red meat fanatic but this dish converted me. It's sooo good. They also a pretty good beer selection. If you're looking for somewhere laid back with great food, try out Crow's Nest!

I know they have metal brunches and a lot of the outside appearance would give indication this place is a metal/rock bar which frankly is right down my alley and something I would probably patronize 2-3 times a week, but I walked in and it was almost nothing of the kind! Absolutely silent in there, zero atmosphere. Was there a jukebox at least? I don't know. Decor seemed to be a little too modern and artsy for my taste and a clientele to match. Staff seemed to be doing their own thing not the most attentive or 'metal friendly'. Ok beers on tap and a beautiful wood bar, but something was really lacking which is such a damn shame because if this place rocked a little more I'd live there.

They have the most delicious food! The grilled cheese is amazing, as I had it last time I was in. Today I tried the monte cristo pulled pork and it certainly didn't disappoint! They're food is always up to par! Also, nice patio out back. The bartenders I've had have always been friendly as well as prompt. I had Christina today and she was super helpful with helping me decide what to order. I highly recommend trying the food!

When crow's nest opened we loved it for the beer selection & the food. the beer selection has declined; it is still a decent beer bar but there are definitely better ones around. The menu has changed, my favorite item, the truffle frittes, are no longer available. On to our experience today at the metal brunch. It took over 30 minutes from when we finished our food & drinks for us to get our check & anther 10 before it was paid for us to leave. This is only because one of us finally tracked down a server to ask for our check. The servers were too distracted with their friends & the couple who seemed to be regulars. our food was delicious & the waffle fries are the best but it is not worth the terrible service. This is not the first time we have had slow service but was definitely the worst experience. They have lost this customer.

Blown Away! I was starving and in the neighborhood so I popped in. I knew nothing about this place at all. Between my companion and I, we ordered a cheese burger, meatloaf sliders, and whipped sweet potatoes. I ordered my burger medium, it arrived well done. This burger was bursting with flavor! I wasn't bothered at all by it being overcooked. The sliders were just perfect. They contained some pickled veggies and sauce with a slight kick. I really don't like sweet potatoes but these where unreal! So light and creamy, yum! My only complaint would be that I entered through the back deck and walked right into a big cloud of smoke from all the employees smoking (bartender excluded). Even the cook was there. I found that pretty gross. But I'm sticking with the 5 stars because the food was so great.

Tiny kitchen = slow service.. but the staff is always very attentive.. went for brunch and it was packed, every table full at noon. Today I tried the New Wave of Bacon Egg and Cheeseburger. This comes with a side for $11.00. I really liked it, it was served on an english muffin and got quite messy at the end but the flavor was really great. In the past I have had the chicken and waffles.. I did miss that, I think I'll go back to that next time.

Finished the last couple of innings of the cardinals game here last Sunday. Pretty standard hipster bar. Drinks were very decently priced. Definitely a lot of regulars, so bartenders were in constant conversation but it was pretty easy to grab their attention. No music during the game and the the shots were very heavy handed. All in all, I've found a great alternative to the CWE bar scene.

  • Liberty B.

Metal Brunch: Had to send cold fries back but the replacements were great. Burger cooked to perfection MR pink in the middle just how I like it. Bloody Mary was nothing to write home about. No service complaints. In fact, my only complaint is that when one attends a "metal brunch", one would naturally expect the music to be effing ROCKING and this was barely audible. More bar than restaurant and we will be back for drinks provided I'm not 20 years older than the rest of the clientele.

My boyfriend and I come here often for beers, great food with it's own culinary flare. I always eat here when food is boring me. What's better than deep fried deviled eggs!! Al is my fave bartender. Great service while being funny and approachable! We love our Nest!
